That Direction

"Who is dressing One Direction??" has been the question on my mind over the past  few weeks as I have indulged in preppy & pretty music videos of the new brit boy band. (New to me at least!) There is a very close connection between the amount of imagery you exposure yourself to, and how creative you feel. I pull inspiration from songs, clothes, commercials and now: music videos. Which is just a beautiful mesh of wardrobe and song together! 



So after a 5 minute Google dig, I found the answer. And her name is Caroline Watson. Homepage is kind of a let down...BUT kudos to her for being my latest spoonful of inspiration! Tapping my heels to their poppy harmony, I found myself scheming by the end of watching their first hit music video.  
"I need to start photographing guys." Think about it! When was the last time you scrolled down and saw a male plastered on this blog? I'll tell you! July 2011, "Lit", I practiced a new Speedlite with husband, Rodrigo. And October 2011, "Partly Cloudy", a mini editorial with Alejandro and girlfriend Monica. That's it. I went to my Photography board on Pinterest to see if I have subconsciously been considering breaking into male model photography for awhile.

Not too much there, just a few choice gems! It's unknown territory and I'm ready to break into it.

A Man's World

The following editorial was crafted and inspired from the 1960s song "It's A Man's Man's Man's World." The photographs have been layed out to be accompanied by the Joss Stone cover of this classic song.

It is a pleasure to finally display this treasure I have envisioned for 5 months. Enjoy! (And can I get an amen sisters?)

A Man's World | Coming Soon

I arrived home from a week in Mexico City just yesterday and have already been glued to the computer picking shots and designing what will be the first conceptual shoot of 2012: "A Man's World" with Talia Solis Rodriguez. After crafting the vision, and scheming location and wardrobe, I now slip into my favorite roles as a photo retoucher, and layout designer. Here's a teaser to hold you over a couple more days! Wardrobe Stylist

The other day I was chatting with my sister, Victoria, who has been in the magazine industry as an executive editor and writer for years. I was telling her that I feel like a one-woman-show in my approach to photography. I explained what goes into me inventing a conceptual shoot, and how I play through all the shots in my head, including a video promo weeks before the scheduled session. I then cast a model to fit the vision, and scout a location. With good reason, the model will then ask what she would wear. And because my inspiration mood board is already laid out in my head, I send her some pins, or if the situation allows, raid her closet an hour before shoot time. My other hats of trade include photographer, retoucher, BTS editor, and writer. I lay out the final product and publish it here with a wonderful sense of accomplishment. When I rambled these roles off to my sister, she was surprised. "All of that is for a staff of 10-15 people." She then helped me realize what this all really means I should be doing: Art Directing. 
But for now, I will put on one of my hats in the pre-producting process as a wardrobe stylist. 3 looks have been crafted for Talia's review, so she hopefully rummage up some similar pieces for next Tuesday's shoot.  

EDITOR'S NOTE: Talia pulled some strings and arranged for a trade to be made at Hotel La Casona. They are giving us the afternoon in any available room of our choice plus freedom to roam the grounds in exchange for a few interior and exterior shots of the hotel. I'm thrilled!
